Ferocactus.info is a personal website that describes the ferocactus genus, a group of barrel-shaped cacti that are native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. About 30 species are named, many featured on this site through information and photos.
The name Ferocactus is derived from the Latin word ferox, meaning fierce and the Greek word kaktos, which refers to an ancient spiny plant. As a genus, ferocacti do live up to their name having fierce spines.
Ferocacti mature into large barrel shapes giving rise to the moniker Barrel Cactus. Most bloom only as large, mature plants, trying the patience of the grower. Growers of these cacti, however, are rewarded by the attractive spines that come in a variety of colors including red, yellow and white.
